In 2015, the United Nations adopted the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, which defines the 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) that will be the blueprint for building a more prosperous planet for all. Having come into effect on January 1, 2016, the SDGs serve as the guiding principles for global development thru 2030. As a world-leading university in innovation and a global center for the high-tech industry, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University has integrated the 2030 Agenda into its strategic plan. Through implementing the SDGs, NYCU aims to cultivate talented global citizens who will contribute to the well-being of the people and the sustainability of the planet.
In February 2015, National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University (at the time, National Chiao Tung University) founded the School of Law - the first Technology Law school in Taiwan. However, decades before, the University already created the Intellectual Property Law Certificate Program in 1993 and the Credit Program in 1994. In 1996, the Legal Center for Enterprise & Entrepreneurship was established. A year later, the University held the National Conference on Intellectual Property Law. The Institute of Technology Law was established in 2000, and it has since been responsible for running the annual National Technology Law Conference. With “Internationalization, Empiricism, and Integration” as its motto, the School of Law continues to create positive social impact and promote Taiwan’s international profile through legal education and service.
The courses at the School of Law can be categorized into 6 thematic clusters, each of which relate to several SDGs:
- Intellectual Property Law (SDG4: Quality Education, SDG8: Decent Work and Economic Growth)
- Transnational Law and International Negotiation (SDG4: Quality Education, SDG13: Climate Action, SDG14: Life Below Water, SDG17: Partnerships of the Goals)
- Information Communication and Competition Law (SDG9: Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure, SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals)
- Business Law, Corporate Governance, and White-Collar Crime (SDG4: Quality Education, SDG10: Reducing Inequality, SDG16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions, SDG17: Partnerships for the Goals)
- Gender Equality, Labor Rights, and Social Justice (SDG1: No Poverty, 5: Gender Equality, SDG10: Reducing Inequalities, SDG16: Peace, Justice and Strong Institutions)
Welcome to the National Chiao Tung University School of Law (NYCU Law), where innovation, excellence and leadership thrive. Here at NYCU Law, we are strongly committed to providing our students with an exceptional and intimate environment for learning. We accomplish this through maintaining a small student body size, which allows students to find the intellectual exchange they seek with their fellow classmates and the faculty.
We make it our mission to prepare students for leadership roles in the rapidly evolving world. Our belief in diversity, responsibility and social awareness has driven us to reach beyond borders and collaborate with distinguished law schools from across the globe. Interaction among different cultures and nations is highly regarded, and we encourage graduating students to continue their studies overseas.
We are in an ongoing quest to search for new areas of legal education to incorporate into our curriculum. NYCU Law offers pioneering interdisciplinary studies between law and economics, technology, medicine, psychology, gender and other fields. We believe that our diverse course offerings enable our students to see the different perspectives of law.
