Dr K.W. Chan is an internationally recognised scholar in Asian law and society, particularly the socio-legal study of Japan’s legal profession and their ethics. He also has research interests in other topics of East Asian law and legal systems.
He has published widely in internationally respected journals and in books published by well-respected publishers such as Routledge and Thomson Reuters. He has authored/co-authored 13 journal articles and 19 book chapters. He has received many invitations to present his research results in conferences, seminars, symposiums, workshops, or lectures in different places in the world, such as Japan, Taiwan, Czech Republic, Spain, Mexico, and U.S.A.
Currently, he is a Visiting Professor (part-time and remote) at National Yang Ming Chiao Tung University, Taiwan and a Collaborative Researcher of the Center for Dispute and Negotiation Research, Waseda University, Japan. He had taught Japanese law, Chinese law, Australian business and company law, and Japanese studies subjects at Macquarie University (MQ), Australia, in which he had also supervised postgraduate research students to successful completion. He had twice been a Visiting Scholar at Waseda Law School, Waseda University, Japan.
He obtained his LLB (Hons) and PCLL from the Faculty of Law, the University of Hong Kong in the 1980s, and Graduate Diploma in Japanese and PhD from MQ. His proficiency in English, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin) and Japanese languages further empowers his research and teaching.
He had obtained legal professional qualifications in four jurisdictions. He is admitted as a solicitor in Hong Kong, a solicitor in England and Wales, a barrister and solicitor in the Australian Capital Territory, and a legal practitioner in New South Wales. He had practised in Hong Kong as a solicitor from October 1987 to September 1995.
He is very experienced in establishing global networks among scholars/researchers and organising international research activities. He was involved in the establishment of the Asian Law and Society Association (ALSA) in 2015 and was its President in 2020-2021. He co-founded the Collaborative Research Network East Asian Law and Society of the Law and Society Association in 2007. He had co-edited books, co-guest-edited special issues in international journals, served in the Editorial Advisory Board of the highly regarded Law and Society Review and is a member in the Editorial Board of the well-respected Asian Journal of Law and Society.
